Gross external debt up 13% YTD to $148bn (93% of GDP) in 1H23
Ukraine’s gross external debt (GED) rose by 13% or $18bn YTD in 1H23, to $148bn, equivalent to 93% of GDP, according to an NBU estimate, up from 81% as of end-2022. As per the NBU, year-head external debt amortizations (1H23-1H24) total $41bn, in line with $38-42bn in the four previous quarters. At the same time, adjusting this amount for trade loans, overdue arrears and overnight interbank loans yields a much smaller tally of $13bn, on top of $3.6bn of interest payments.
